A Great Colleague, A Better Friend

Because our programs started at the same time, I had an affinity for Lou unlike other coaches. I would ask him if he was struggling with certain aspects of getting the program started and he would laugh and then launch into a dissertation on how many times that had happened. What always struck me was Lou never complained about those challenges, he just stated them matter of factly, then went about dealing with them. He loved every aspect of coaching, the challenges as well as the successes. I admired that and have tried my best since then to treat our profession the way Lou did. We shared a room a couple of times at the NCAA Championship. As the final day was always on Mother's Day, being at the championship usually meant being away from your family. The first thing Lou did in the morning was call his wife and wish her a happy Mother's Day. Then he would get off the phone and remind me that I should call me wife and do the same. I think I would have done so even without his prompting, but I think Lou wanted to make sure that we were making the best out of a less than optimal situation. I had been married for significantly less years than he, but he just wanted to remind that the little things make a difference. I will not miss the referees walking onto the deck before a match and giving Lou a hug like he had rescued them from juvenile hall, although he probably had. However, I will miss him dearly. God Bless you, Lou.
